To illustrate this internal spiritual logic, the Master gave the moving example of a visually impaired man. If a blind man goes to the sacred river Ganges and takes a holy dip, his spiritual impurities and sins may well be washed away by the divine grace of the waters. However, his physical blindness will not miraculously vanish. Why? Because that physical blindness is his Prarabdha—a specific karmic consequence tied to his current physical body that must be endured until its designated term ends. Until the complex accounting of past actions is entirely settled, the soul cannot achieve complete liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth.
The Stubborn Bonds of the Bound Soul
"Like a desert camel chewing on sharp thorns, the bound soul refuses to stop indulging in attachments that cause its own bleeding."
Why does a human being, despite understanding the terrifying consequences of sin, repeatedly indulge in wrongdoing? Sri Ramakrishna classified such spiritually trapped individuals as Baddhajivas or "bound souls."
He vividly captured their psychology using the earthly metaphor of a desert camel. A camel has an innate infatuation with thorny bushes. As it aggressively chews on the sharp thorns, the jagged edges pierce its mouth, causing blood to flow profusely. Despite its mouth dripping with blood, the camel refuses to stop eating those very thorns.
Similarly, worldly and spiritually ignorant individuals are completely blinded by temporal attachments. Even when they consciously realize that their unethical deeds will lead to unimaginable suffering, their deep-seated habits and obsessive attachments prevent them from abandoning the path of vice. They remain trapped in a self-destructive cycle of their own making.
The Mirage of Ritualistic Cleansing

To dispel the illusion that one can easily trick the universe through superficial rituals, Sri Ramakrishna shared a humorous folk tale with his characteristic wit. People often joyfully exclaim that taking a dip in the holy Ganges washes away all human sins. The Master jokingly added that when a person enters the sacred river, their sins, terrified of the holy water, temporarily leave their body and perch safely on the branches of the trees lining the riverbanks. The moment the individual steps out of the water, thinking they are completely pure, those very sins silently drop back down onto their shoulders!
Through this humorous anecdote, Sri Ramakrishna drove home a profound spiritual warning: no external ritual, clever deception, or superficial trickery can absolve a person from the moral responsibility of their actions. The law of cause and effect is absolute.
Divine Justice and the Path to Deliverance

The Master observed that a fundamental lack of faith in the Divine is what emboldens a person to believe they can sin in the shadows and escape unscathed. However, the cosmic wheel of karma remains completely unyielding. No one can ever hide from the all-seeing gaze of the Divine.
Yet, Sri Ramakrishna did not leave humanity in a state of perpetual despair. He revealed that while the cycle of karma is strict, it is not entirely absolute before supreme devotion. The intensity of Prarabdha can be significantly mitigated through the cultivation of Shuddha Bhakti (unalloyed, pure devotion) and regular spiritual practice (Sadhana). Intense longing and sincere surrender to the Divine have the power to soften the heaviest blows of destiny, transforming what could have been a fatal wound into a mere pinprick.

Therefore, rather than growing impatient or bitter at the temporary prosperity of the unjust, our sole duty is to safeguard the purity of our own actions, cultivate absolute righteousness, and anchor our souls in unwavering faith in the Divine.
